Customer Service & Retention AI

Zendesk AI

Zendesk AI is the AI layer in Zendesk's customer-service platform. Its standard AI agents run with a Zendesk Support or Suite service plan, rather than as a standalone layer on another helpdesk. The service plan supplies ticketing, customer context, knowledge, routing, and human handoff; AI use is then measured through customer requests resolved without human escalation. Zendesk's separately sold Forethought AI agents can run on an existing service platform, but that is a distinct sales-led offer with no public price.

Buying view: Choose Zendesk AI when the support operation needs a common system for several service channels and can maintain the knowledge, actions, routing, and escalation rules behind it. It is usually more than a small store needs for a single inbox, but it gives larger teams a defined path from AI handling back to people.

Capabilities

Zendesk's current customer-service plans combine email and ticketing with broader Suite capabilities such as knowledge, messaging, live chat, telephony, omnichannel routing, and AI agents. The standard AI agents are included with Zendesk Support or Suite plans: they can interact with customers through messaging, email—including API and web-form routes—and voice early access, and can perform actions in authorized systems. Connecting Shopify or another business system gives the agent data or approved actions; it does not make the standard Zendesk AI product an add-on for a different helpdesk. A request only counts as an automated resolution when the AI agent resolves it without escalating to a human agent.

What problem it addresses

A support team loses speed and context when email, messages, phone work, knowledge, and routing rules live in separate tools. The team needs one operating system for ordinary tickets and a way for AI to handle appropriate work without making human escalation disappear.

How people use it

Customer requests enter through channels configured in the Zendesk account. AI agents can use the available knowledge and authorized actions; requests that need people continue to the Zendesk human-support workflow. The same organization can use routing, ticket history, and reporting to operate the human side of that path. A separately quoted Forethought AI agent can work with another service platform, but it is not included in this Zendesk-plan workflow.

How an AI-resolved request differs from a human escalation

This is a customer-service workflow, not a promise that every request can be automated. The key commercial branch is the same one Zendesk uses for metering: a request becomes an automated resolution only when the AI agent completes it without handing it to a person. Other requests retain the human-support path.

What each module does and its role

Ticketing and customer context

Support Team starts with email, a ticketing system, routing, prebuilt analytics, customer context, automations, and triggers. These features create the operating record around a request so a person can see relevant details before they reply or take over. The product does not make every connected business record correct by itself.

AI Agents

AI agents are customer-facing agents for messaging, email, and voice early access. Zendesk says they can converse with customers and perform actions in authorized systems. Their role is to resolve eligible requests; their use is measured through automated resolutions rather than a claim that all conversations should be automated.

Knowledge and Action Builder

Suite Team includes an AI knowledge base and Action Builder. Action Builder is the route for designing and integrating multi-step actions across Zendesk and third-party systems. Teams should verify the connected systems and permitted action scope before presenting an action as available to every customer.

Routing and human escalation

Suite plans add omnichannel routing, and Zendesk describes routing by agent status, capacity, skills, and ticket priority. When AI does not complete a request without escalation, the work remains a human support matter. Routing helps decide who handles that next step; it does not remove the need for a current escalation policy.

Reporting and administration

The public plan surface includes prebuilt analytics, and higher tiers add reporting, skills-based routing, approval workflows, sandboxes, and custom roles. These modules give operations a way to inspect service trends and govern changes. Their availability differs by plan, so a quote should name the intended operating controls.

Commercial plans

For the standard Zendesk AI product, the service plan is not optional: Zendesk says AI agents are included with Support and Suite plans. Each row therefore combines the fixed customer-service seat price with the plan's AI-agent access and its separate automated-resolution meter. Zendesk publishes that every plan has a resolution allowance and that additional usage is priced by outcome tier, but it does not publish a universal overage rate. Forethought AI agents by Zendesk are a separate, cross-platform offer and need a sales quote.

Support Team + standard AI agents

Email and ticketing foundation with routing, analytics, customer context, automations, and triggers. Zendesk's current pricing FAQ says Support plans include AI agents; it is the lower-cost entry when email-based support is sufficient, not an omnichannel Suite.

Base service: $19 per agent/month, paid yearlyAI: included access + resolution usage above the plan allowance
Suite Team + standard AI agents

Adds AI Knowledge Base, Action Builder, omnichannel routing, messaging and live chat, and telephony. This is the published entry plan for a multichannel Zendesk service setup with AI agents.

Base service: $55 per agent/month, paid yearlyAI: included access + resolution usage above the plan allowance
Suite Professional + standard AI agents

Adds Admin Copilot, App Builder, Writing Tools, Quick Reports, skills-based routing, and an IVR phone tree. Choose this higher fixed seat price only when those operating controls are needed in addition to the service and AI-agent foundation.

Base service: $115 per agent/month, paid yearlyAI: included access + resolution usage above the plan allowance
Suite Enterprise + Copilot + standard AI agents

Adds enterprise controls such as Intelligent Triage, Auto Assist, approval workflows, sandbox, and custom agent roles. It remains a Zendesk service-plan purchase plus AI-resolution usage, not a separately priced AI layer.

Base service: contact salesAI: included access + resolution usage above the plan allowance
Copilot add-on

Optional AI assistance for human agents and administrators. It is separate from customer-facing AI agents and still requires an underlying Zendesk service plan.

Add-on: $50 per agent/month, paid yearly
Automated-resolution meter

Zendesk counts a customer request as an automated resolution only when the AI agent resolves it without human escalation. The public price page says the allowance can be applied across resolution tiers based on outcome complexity and value.

Forethought AI agents by Zendesk

Zendesk markets this separately after its Forethought acquisition. It can run in an existing service platform, including one that is not Zendesk, so it should not be treated as a benefit included in the Support or Suite rows above.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI Agent resolution cost the same as an agent seat?

No. Zendesk describes the base service as seat-priced and AI usage as automated resolutions. A budgeting model needs both the number of service seats and the expected number of requests completed without human escalation.

Can standard Zendesk AI run on another helpdesk?

No. The standard Zendesk AI agents and Copilot described on this page are features of a Zendesk Support or Suite service plan. Integrations and Action Builder can retrieve data from, or take approved actions in, third-party business systems, but the customer-service workspace and human handoff remain in Zendesk. Forethought AI agents by Zendesk are a separate sales-led offering that Zendesk says can run on an existing non-Zendesk service platform; their price is not published and they are not included in Support or Suite.

What makes a request an automated resolution?

Zendesk's public pricing defines it as a customer request successfully resolved by the AI agent without escalation to a human agent. This definition is both a billing boundary and a useful operating-quality boundary.
