Buying view: ZeroBG fits small teams that need to prepare product images in a browser. The free preview helps them inspect a cutout before paying for an HD file. AI edits can change product details, so images that must preserve shape, text and color need comparison with the original.
ZeroBG product photo editing features
ZeroBG removes backgrounds, repairs selected areas and enlarges small images or reduces light blur. The operator chooses a tool, supplies a photo and checks the result before downloading. Simple edits such as adding text, adding borders or combining images stay in the browser; AI edits may redraw details.
Prepare product photos for listing
Product photos may have distracting backgrounds, rough cutout edges or objects that need removing before listing. ZeroBG handles these edits online, including white backgrounds, brush repairs and removal of selected objects.
Upload, check and download product photos
The operator uploads a photo and checks the automatic result. A brush removes leftover background or restores parts that were cut out by mistake; the finished image can have a transparent or solid background. Batch removal handles several photos at once, while connecting the API requires a developer.
Official cutout examples
The homepage demonstrates cutouts of animal fur, openings in a logo and a glass vase. These vendor samples give a useful idea of which fine edges to inspect in the team’s own product photos.
View the official samples ↗Prepare a product cutout
The operator uploads a product photo, checks the automatic cutout and uses the touch-up brush where needed. A transparent or solid background can then be selected before the finished file is downloaded.
Clean, enhance or compose an image
The operator chooses a tool for the required edit, provides the image and its task-specific settings, then compares the result before exporting. Local layout tools process the file in the browser; AI tools return a preview of the generated edit.
Background removal and photo editing tools
ZeroBG provides separate tools for background removal, photo cleanup, enhancement and browser editing.
Background remover
An operator uploads a JPG, PNG or WebP image and ZeroBG separates the main subject from its surroundings. The result can remain transparent or use a solid background, giving product images a consistent presentation.
Touch-up brush
The brush removes leftover background and restores parts removed by mistake. After brushing over the affected area, the operator can generate the full-size image again and check the repaired edges.
Product photo white background
This tool places the product cutout on pure #FFFFFF white at the uploaded dimensions. It neither crops nor pads the image, so the seller still checks the destination platform’s size and composition requirements.
Change background / Add background
These tools place the cutout on a white, black, red or blue background and can add a natural shadow. They change the background around the subject; removing an object inside the picture uses Photo Cleanup.
Blur background
Background blur keeps the subject sharp while softening its surroundings. The operator chooses a blur strength and compares the preview before exporting, retaining the scene rather than replacing it with a flat color.
Photo Cleanup
The operator paints over an unwanted object, person, text, emoji or a watermark they have rights to remove. AI fills the selected area from its surroundings, with simple walls, sky or grass providing clearer reconstruction context.
Remove a Shadow
This tool tries to lighten soft shadows without a written instruction. Dark, hard-edged shadows or shadows mixed with text may remain, so the result still needs inspection.
Remove Glare
This tool attempts to reduce small reflections on glasses, glass or screens. Large overexposed areas and reflections covering eyes can remain, and the AI edit may alter nearby details.
Brighten a Photo
Brightness and exposure sliders adjust a dark photo inside the browser. A separate AI correction can also try to fix exposure, but may change details and cannot reliably recover areas that are completely black.
Image Upscaler
The upscaler enlarges an image four times, up to 4096 pixels. Operators can inspect edges and lettering at 100% zoom before downloading, which matters when preparing small source images for a product page.
Unblur Image
Unblur Image targets light camera shake or motion blur and shows a before-and-after preview. The operator can then choose to enlarge the result. Photos that are badly out of focus are a poor fit for the tool’s stated use.
Edit with a Prompt
The operator uploads a photo and describes the desired change to its scene, color, style or objects. The AI redraws the image, so this suits creative edits where changes to the original details are acceptable.
Expand Image
The operator chooses an image ratio or how many pixels to add on each side. AI fills the new space around the photo to change its framing, rather than enlarging the existing content. The join between the original and added area may need inspection.
Old Photo Repair
A scanned photo can be processed to reduce scratches, tears, creases and fading. The result is a reconstructed image rather than a larger copy, and a black-and-white source may return in color.
Colorize
Colorize adds estimated colors to a black-and-white photo without a written instruction. Clothing, skin tones and objects may be colored incorrectly; the result does not establish what the original colors were.
Pencil Sketch
The filter turns photo edges into pencil lines and shaded areas into hatching, without a written instruction. It produces a pencil-style version of the existing photo.
Photo to Cartoon
A single-click transformation produces one cartoon interpretation of the uploaded image. There is no character list or prompt field, and the result may change colors, faces or small details.
Photo to Sticker
This tool adds a white outline to the subject and prepares PNG sizes for chat or print. The operator chooses outline thickness and inspects the prepared size pack before downloading.
AI Aging Filter
A user selects a target age for their own portrait to generate an older or younger appearance. The tool is intended for entertainment and requires the user’s own photo. It does not predict medical or biological aging.
Hairstyle Try-On
A user chooses a listed haircut and an optional hair color for their own photo. The preview can change facial details, so it illustrates a hairstyle rather than guaranteeing an exact appearance.
Local browser editing
The local tools blur faces or selected areas, pixelate an image, crop it into a circle, add a border, flip it, add text or combine two images. All eight work inside the browser and export the full-size file without uploading the photo.
ID and passport photo tools
Dedicated tools change a portrait’s background to reference colors and prepare 2×2-inch or 35×45-mm crops with print sheets. The operator still checks the destination’s pose, head size and background rules; the tools do not certify acceptance.
Batch background removal
Batch processing applies background removal to several uploaded images in one operation. It serves repeated product-photo work while keeping each resulting image available for review and download.
API
A developer can connect ZeroBG’s API so a team’s own system sends photos for processing and receives the edited images. It accepts image files, links or encoded image data, supports credit-balance queries, and lets the server set the output format, background, crop and position.
Commercial plans
The ZeroBG website lets sellers preview AI results for free; a full-resolution download uses a credit or a single-image purchase. Credits can come from a pack or a subscription. Local browser edits are free and do not use these credits.

Choose single-image, batch or API processing
ZeroBG offers different routes for editing one image, removing backgrounds in batches and processing images through an internal system.
- Prepare a white-background listing photo
Recommendation: Use Product photo white background, inspect the edges and download the finished image.
Why: The tool replaces the background with pure white and preserves image size; listing crop and marketplace requirements still need a separate check.
- Process a batch of products
Recommendation: Use a credit pack or Pro for batches of up to 10 images; Business supports up to 50.
Why: Batch size is a processing limit, while HD credits determine the number of paid outputs available.
- Add removal to an internal workflow
Recommendation: Have a developer call the background removal API from a server.
Why: Every successful call consumes a credit, including preview output. The browser’s free preview rule does not apply to the API.
ZeroBG alternatives compared
Choosing an image tool depends on the work beyond background removal: shared team assets, bulk processing, API automation and marketing layouts have different allowances and purchase requirements.
| Product | Product scope | Best-fit scenarios and implementation responsibilities | Pricing and billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZeroBGCurrent product | ZeroBG is an online photo editor that helps sellers remove product backgrounds, fix edges and prepare images for product listings. | Best fitUse free web previews to inspect a result, then spend credits on HD cloud outputs. Local browser tools have a separate free workflow. ImplementationUpload and edit in the browser, or have a developer integrate the server API. | |
| Photoroom | Photoroom is a product photo editor for ecommerce teams creating images for product pages and marketing campaigns. | Best fitWhen several people need shared product designs, brand assets and AI backgrounds, Photoroom’s Space brings that work together. It extends the individual upload-and-edit workflow compared here with ZeroBG, but members share the Space’s quotas rather than receiving separate allowances. ImplementationCreate a Space, invite collaborators and add brand assets, then edit product images and share designs within that Space. Photoroom Space billing and seats ↗ | Pro: US$7.50/month billed annually; 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports/month. A Space supports up to 50 members at no extra seat charge; its quotas are shared. Photoroom pricing ↗ |
| Pixelcut | Pixelcut is an AI image editor with bulk tools for applying the same background, size and other edits to product photos. | Best fitFor catalog-wide edits with the same settings, Pixelcut’s bulk tool accepts up to 10,000 images per batch, compared with up to 50 on ZeroBG Business. That is processing capacity, not an included monthly allowance: Pixelcut Pro includes only 1,000 batch exports/month. ImplementationUpload images or import a Dropbox folder, apply shared edits, inspect individual results and download the finished batch as a ZIP file. Pixelcut bulk editing ↗ | Pro: US$8/month billed annually; 600 AI credits/month, a three-person team and 1,000 batch exports/month. The 10,000-image batch capacity does not increase that export allowance. Pixelcut pricing ↗ |
| Claid.ai | Claid.ai is an AI product-image platform whose API can combine background removal, enhancement and resizing in one workflow. | Best fitWhen product images must pass through several automated steps, Claid’s API workflows can chain those operations. ZeroBG also offers a background-removal API; Claid is worth comparing for the combined workflow, which needs developer integration and a separate API credit budget. ImplementationA developer configures the processing steps, submits image jobs and handles asynchronous completion notifications before saving results to the catalog. Claid API workflows ↗ | API credits are purchased separately: background removal uses 2 credits/image. Web-app credits cannot be used for the API. Custom workflows and managed integration require a sales quote. Claid API pricing ↗ |
| Canva | Canva is a design platform that combines background removal with templates, text and layouts for marketing graphics. | Best fitWhen a cutout must become a promotion banner or social post, Canva keeps image editing and layout in the same workspace. This is a broader design subscription than ZeroBG’s photo-editing workflow; it makes sense when the team also needs those design tools. ImplementationRemove a background, place the cutout in a design and add text before export. Paid bulk removal handles up to 50 uploaded images in one folder at a time. Canva background removal ↗ | Canva Pro: US$144/year for one person, including background removal and design tools. Team collaboration under Canva Business is US$250 per person/year; prices exclude tax. Canva pricing ↗ |
Is ZeroBG a fit for the team?
Choosing ZeroBG depends on cutout quality, HD image volume and whether the team needs browser tools or a developer-built workflow.
Start with your actual photos
Use the free preview on the kinds of product photos the team actually publishes, especially fine or difficult edges. Repair the cutout with the brush before spending a credit on the full-resolution file.
Compare output volume and editing needs
A credit pack suits occasional HD downloads. For repeated background removal and upscaling, compare Pixelcut Pro; for product scenes and images of fashion models, compare Photoroom’s AI tools and export allowance.
Separate website use from API use
Using the website does not require an API connection. An API is for a team that wants its own system to send images automatically and has a developer to build that connection. Each successful call costs a credit, even for a preview, and daily and per-minute limits apply. It is not a ready-made Shopify or marketplace connector.
Frequently asked questions
Product photo specifications, API credit use and file retention rules affect how a team uses ZeroBG.
Does a white background make a product image ready for every marketplace?
The product-white-background tool replaces the background with #FFFFFF while preserving upload dimensions, without cropping or padding. Sellers still need to check the marketplace’s framing and size requirements; ZeroBG does not guarantee listing approval.
Is an API preview free like a website preview?
No. Every successful API call costs 1 credit, including a request for a preview-size image. A developer must send requests from a server using a ZeroBG API key; another website cannot call it directly from the browser.
How long are uploaded images kept?
Anonymous uploads are deleted after 24 hours. Account history is retained for 30 days on Free, 90 on Basic, 180 on Pro and permanently on Business. The local browser editing tools do not upload the photo.
Can generated edits change the product itself?
Prompt editing redraws the image, and AI glare removal or exposure correction may also alter small details. For catalog images where shape, text or color must stay exact, the seller should compare those details against the original before using the result.
Connect ZeroBG through its API
A developer can use the ZeroBG API to add background removal to the team’s own image-processing system.
Send an image file, link or encoded image data; receive the edited image and credit-use information.. A developer must write the connection and keep the API key on the server. Each successful request uses 1 credit, including preview-size output. Direct calls from another website’s browser page are not supported.
